As a Latino man covered in tattoos, I've been stereotyped, looked down on, avoided and discriminated against because of the color of my skin, the way I look and probably the way I dress. That's real and it's shaped how I move through the world.
I want my brand to continue to make people stop and ask "What the fuck are they doing?" Not because we're chasing attention, but because we're creating something that doesn't fit inside a box.
And when I say "we" I want to correct myself. I started this brand alone. Every idea, every late night, every risk, every penny. It began with me. But it stopped being just mine the moment other people believed in it. "We" represents everyone who's supported it, worn it, created with it and helped push it forward.
This country has always been built by people from different backgrounds. Immigrants. People of every race, culture and walk of life. That's part of what America is.
We have the freedom to create, to speak, to build something that reflects who we are. I'm grateful for that freedom and I'm going to keep fucking using it.
While we celebrate where we are today, we shouldn't forget the people who were here first or the history that shaped this country. Understanding that history doesn't take away from anyone's story. It adds to it.
Also, Happy Early Birthday to me.
